Ultrasonic technique is very recent. It has been created in order to treat difficult areas of fat deposits with large amounts of fibrous tissue. Ultrasound assisted Liposuction removes fat through a fat emulsification process termed "cavitation." The technique is well suited to areas of more fibrous fat, as over the upper back.
When Internal Ultrasonic Technique is employed, it still has to be followed by the use of conventional liposuction for final contouring.
The ultrasound units suffer the disadvantage of significant additional expense in the cost of the equipment and the cannulas themselves, which wear with use and must be replaced regularly.
Since ultrasound is generated at the site of the cannula, there is a fairly high risk of skin burns and even perforation of the skin. This may occur even in the hands of an experienced surgeon. Skin necrosis (areas of dead skin), change in coloration and irregularities may follow. Burns of deep tissues are also possible.
External ultrasonic waves are even more effective than Internal Ultrasound in that they are able to liquefy the fat to enable extraction of more fat. They are particularly effective for such areas with tough fibrous fat deposits as upper abdomen, back and flanks.
Internal Cannula-generated Ultrasound is very risky. When a cannula comes too close to the surface of the skin, it can cause burn injury. When a cannula is too close to the inner tissues, it can cause muscle and organ burns.
An External Ultrasound device looks like an iron; it is applied through a special gel, directly on the skin surface. Unlike Internal Ultrasound equipment, this device generates an even spread of ultrasonic waves which does not cause burn injury.
However, External Ultrasound can and is used to liquefy both the deep fat and the superficial (near the skin) fat. It is, thus, much more effective than Internal Ultrasound where final contouring is concerned.
Use of microcannulas (3 mm or less) is one of the secrets of Dr. Chugay's technique. These are is harder to learn and use and are more time-consuming. However, they are less traumatic on tissues and will give you a more precise extraction of fat.
Dr. Chugay was one of the first surgeons in the country to pioneer the use of microcannulas. Despite Dr. Chugay's and his colleagues' efforts, microcannulas are still unused by most surgeons who prefer traditional instruments. At present, microcannulas are mostly known in New York and overseas.
Recent evolution of cannula technology produced a variety of unique special-shape cannulas for advanced contouring different areas of the body. Dr. Chugay spends a great deal of time perfecting and monitoring different cannula shapes, participating in and observing the work of the best liposuction surgeons in the world.
For facial liposuction, it is important to be extremely gentle to avoid any irregularities and dimpling. Special-shaped and very tiny cannulas are best (2.0 mm or even smaller).
